Barkcloth Research Films 

Paul Bukenya Katamira and Vincent Kajooga - 9th generation barkcloth masters - carefully stripping the inner bark of the mutuba tree, August 2019

The mutuba tree bark is boiled for 10 minutes or so to soften it before beating, August 2019

The softened bark is beaten with a ridged, wooden mallet by Vincent for several hours, until the desired size has been reached and the cloth becomes fine and supple, August 2019.

The barkcloth is sometimes dyed in local iron-rich mud - the tannin-iron reaction turns the cloth a permanent black,  August 2019.
